Kentucky Science and Technology Corporation (KSTC), a Lexington-based independent and innovative 501(c)(3) non-profit and leader in developing and managing creative initiatives in education, entrepreneurship, disruptive R&D, and economic competitiveness, seeks a well-organized, technically savvy, self-directed and experienced Controller to lead its accounting operations. 

Position Description 

A seasoned accounting professional with strong interpersonal communication skills. Works within a team environment to provide leadership and apply strong technical knowledge to produce accurate and timely financial reports. Strategically develops and refines accounting policies and procedures to maintain and strengthen internal controls and cultivate an environment of accountability. Utilizes management accounting experience to excel at an innovative non-profit, funded by multiple federal, state and private sources and works with diverse stakeholders including start-up and small businesses. Proactively develops and communicates contractual budget analyses and monitoring support to program staff and senior management. 

Primary responsibilities include: 

  • Direct accounting operations including Revenue Recognition, A/P, A/R, G/L, Payroll, P/L, Indirect Cost Recovery, cash management and banking relationships 
  • Oversee all internal and external program, regulatory and consolidated financial reporting 
  • Compile and refine proactive analyses of historical, current and projected financial and operating results to develop recommendations for program management, strategy and operating improvement 
  • Coordinate month-end and year-end close process to provide timely financial reports and budget review 
  • Coordinate annual independent audit process and other periodic governmental audits 
  • Contribute to development and negotiation of program funding and service provider contracts and subgrants 
  • Support program due diligence and federal/state regulatory compliance and reporting 


Required Skills & Experience 

  • 10+ years of related experience in an accounting or financial management role 
  • Strong analytical and written communication skills combined with the ability to think critically and strategically 
  • Strong MS Office skills and keen attention to detail 
  • Ability to work effectively with accounting and program staff, service providers, state and federal government personnel, senior management, etc. 
  • Experience with Blackbaud’s Financial Edge or other comparable fund accounting software, a plus 
  • Human Resources and/or risk management experience, a plus 
  • CPA required --- plus CMA and/or MBA preferred, but not required
